April 20th is recognized as National Death Doula Day, we at Adoray Home Health & Hospice take this moment to honor the profound work of our End-of-Life (EOL) Doulas. Their unwavering commitment and deep compassion have been a beacon of support for many families within our community.
The Adoray End-of-Doulas (EOLDs) program was launched in December 2023 thanks to the generosity of the Global Doula Project and the Power of 100 Women River Falls. The funds donated by these two groups helped Adoray start our new EOL Doula program, which will ensure that no one dies alone and that loved ones are supported through the dying process. An end-of-life doula is a trained professional who provides emotional, spiritual, and practical support to the dying person and their family. Adoray’s end-of-life doula program will be the first of its kind in the region.
EOLDs enrich the hospice journey for patients and their families. The Doulas advocate for the wishes of patients in their final phase of life, promoting an atmosphere of peace through listening, facilitating meaningful conversations, and ongoing education.
As part of the Adoray Circle of Care, the EOLDs are available as an added layer of encouragement and support for the patient and their families.
What is an End-Of-Life Doula you ask?
You may have heard of the term “doula,” usually referring to a midwife-type person, who comforts a mother during the birth process. A birth doula advocates for the birthing woman with the goal of helping her to feel more comfortable, at ease, and empowered.
Take this scenario to the other end of the life experience. Many people in present day society have not experienced the “passing” of someone close to them. Some individuals may have a tough time saying the word “death.” When we or someone close to us receives a serious diagnosis, we are faced with the truth of human mortality. It is normal to feel apprehensive, that things are beyond our control, or fearful of the unknown.
Enter the Adoray Home Health & Hospice End-of-Life Doula (EOLD). Much like a birth doula, the EOLDs aim to advocate and provide support for people facing this final phase of life. They can help you and your loved ones prepare for when this time of life becomes short. EOLDs provide a knowledgeable, compassionate listening presence. These doulas can collaborate with you to facilitate meaningful, healing conversations. They can field ideas and are unafraid to talk with you about wide-ranging concepts around the subject of death and dying. They will listen carefully to fears or regrets without judgment.
