Occupational Therapy Month Spotlight - Kate Brown

Date: Apr, 5 2021

When did you realize you wanted to pursue a career in Occupational Therapy?

During my sophomore year of college, I had gotten a job as a PCA (personal care attendant). Part of my role with one of my clients was to bring her to her OT appointments. It was amazing to see how much she loved going, how much she improved in certain skills and how many amazing tricks and tools the OT had up her sleeve to help my client. The college I attended happened to offer a Master’s in OT, so I ended up changing my major from nursing to OT, and the rest is history as they say!

What helped you determine that this was the career path for you?

I knew I wanted to work in a helping profession, and knowing that I am giving people the tools they need to live their most independent and successful life is so rewarding!

Why did you choose to work in the Home Health setting?

I have worked in an acute-care hospital, transitional care unit and now home health. In my first two settings, I didn’t get to see the patient through until the end. I was a stepping stone in that process. Now, in home health, I get to see the patient in their home setting, and most times until they’ve reached the point where they don’t need me anymore! It’s wonderful to see people come to their fullest potential!

Why did you choose to work for Adoray?

I loved that Adoray was a smaller, local company. The core values and mission statement of Adoray align with my own personal values, which was very important to me! The staff puts so much love and compassion into their work and it is so clear everyone genuinely cares about what they do and the people we serve.

What is the most rewarding part about being in this field?

Seeing people realize their own potential and trying to be a bright spot in someone’s day!

What is the most challenging part about this career?

It can be so hard when my patients cannot achieve what their prior level of independence may have been, for whatever reason that may be. That can definitely be a hard adjustment to make!

What is a lesson you have learned throughout your career in Occupational Therapy that you would like to share with others?

Sometimes the simplest of things can make the biggest differences. Also, a smile, kindness and compassion go a long way. The world needs more of that!
